Latin: Fumaria officinalis
Other names: Common fumitory, earth smoke
Family: Papaveraceae
Fumitory is a common weed found in the United Kingdom that belongs to the poppy family (Papaveraceae). It is also known as common fumitory or earth smoke. This weed can be identified by its delicate, finely divided leaves and clusters of small, pinkish-purple flowers.
Fumitory is an annual or biennial plant that typically grows upright, reaching heights of up to 50 centimeters.
Identifying Fumitory
The leaves of fumitory are finely divided and fern-like, with numerous segments that are linear to lanceolate in shape. The leaves are bluish-green in color and have a delicate appearance.
The flowers of fumitory are small and tubular, arranged in elongated clusters known as racemes. The flowers can vary in color, ranging from pinkish-purple to white. The flowers bloom from spring to summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
The Challenges of Fumitory
Like other weeds, particularly broad leaved weeds, Fumitory competes for resources such as nutrients, water, and sunlight, leading to reduced crop yields and impaired garden aesthetics.
One of the challenges with fumitory is its tenacious root system. The deep taproot of fumitory can make mechanical removal difficult, and regrowth can occur if the entire root is not effectively removed.
