How it works?

NUCROP is our hybrid herbicide solution in cooperation with ag-tech startup crop.zone. NUCROP is based on a unique hybrid herbicide concept that combines a conductive liquid called Volt.fuel with electro-physical weeding. This technology is an alternative and complementary solution to chemical-based weed control. Application of Volt.fuel allows for optimised, safer electrical energy management as it uses much less power than other electric weeding technologies and raises agronomic efficacy.

PotatoEurope Innovation Awards: We won! Twice!

NUCROP, our hybrid herbicide solution in cooperation with ag-tech startup CROP.ZONE won not one, but two prizes at the PotatoEurope Innovation Awards.

By winning the audience award, NUCROP is recognized as a real game changer in potato desiccation by potato professionals in Europe. Additionally, NUCROP also took home the silver medal at the PotatoEurope Innovation Awards.

Electric current with a voltage of 2000 to 5000 V is generated by the tractor with a PTO generator and special high-voltage units. With the help of special applicators, the current is passed through the plants. This destroys the plant’s water supply to such an extent that the plants wither and die.

How deep are the roots destroyed?

When treated with NUCROP or Long Range Applicators (LRAs), dry roots have been observed so far, especially the taproot of thistles at a depth of about 15 cm. The depth of destruction also depends on the type of applicator, soil, moisture, plant species and the amount of energy applied.

What is the travel speed?

The speed of operation in the field generally determines the energy application rate per hectare. Potato tests from 2020-2022 showed that very good results can be achieved at 3-6 km/h. The rate of application always depends on the density of the crop.

What is Volt.fuel?

Volt.fuel is a conductive liquid and is sprayed onto the plants during electrophysical treatment with NUCROP. As with chemical herbicides, it is the key formula that allows the electric current of the active ingredient to work effectively and minimizes the amount needed. As a result, the working width and treatment speed can be increased.

How does Volt.fuel work?

The active ingredient must always reach the site of action as efficiently as possible. Therefore, the current must penetrate the contacted leaves with as little loss as possible and then destroy the water supply in the stems and in some cases the roots. Volt.fuel unites the hairs and irregularities on the leaves, softens the wax layers and thus increases the electrical conductivity. Less energy for more effect is the result.

Which application areas are recommended and why?

NUCROP system applicators are tailored for individual applications. The current setup was developed and validated for potato dessication. NUCROP will further develop this configuration and validate its effectiveness for other domains. Other potential segments could be inter-crop, pre-sowing or post-harvest use.

What is the application rate per ha?

In potatoes, an application rate of 150 L/ha water and 10 L/ha Volt.fuel proved to be very good. Depending on environmental conditions (mostly wilted plants, dew on plants, etc.), a modification may be appropriate in individual cases.

Why is NUCROP focusing on potatoes?

The application of plant protection products shortly before harvest is viewed more and more critically. Therefore, NUCROP offers the possibility to have an effectiveness similar to chemical methods but without residues.

How can NUCROP contribute to the conversion to organic farming

The BIO formulation of the Volt.fuel product makes it possible to use the system in organic agriculture from 2023.
