In 2023 ‘Doing for Wright by Waterways’ saw more than 100,000 manuka trees sown for waterway protection all over New Zealand and it’s back for 2024!

The promotion was so well-received, it’s been expanded this season to include Fruitfed customers as well, with all Nufarm products now included compared with phenoxy herbicides last year.

How to claim your trees?

Spend $3000 on any Nufarm product at PGG Wrightson’s or Fruitfed Supplies between March and May, and you’ll receive 75 manuka seedlings to plant on your farm, or to donate to community planting projects.

2023 Success Story:

800 of last year’s seedlings are now thriving on 120 hectare of a family beef farm in the middle reaches of the Kaipara Harbour, and owners Ralph and Lynne Schultz couldn’t be happier to have them.

They’ve been planting mixed native species in gullies and wetland areas every season for years, and Doing Wright by Waterways put that on-going effort into overdrive last winter.

“It enabled us to do a bigger area of planting than normal – we were really grateful for them, because it was a bonus for us to be able to plant more land,” Lynne Schultz says.

“They were very good seedlings and they’re powering away now. Staff from PGGW Wellsford came and helped plant them, so it was concerted effort.”

With 3 kilometres of coastal boundary, all of the farm’s catchments drain into the harbour. Lynne says regenerating natives not only helps protect the Kaipara, one of the world’s largest harbours, but enhances biodiversity and birdlife on the farm.

“It helps the whole environment. We can’t just keep farming the grassland and not give something back…”

Nufarm marketing manager Emma Ault says Nufarm was thrilled to be able to support PGG Wrightson’s farmers in planting and protecting their waterways.

“The other outcome we found really satisfying was the number of trees donated by farmers to local school and community plantings as a result of Doing Wright by Waterways last year.”

Nga Rakau Nurseries in West Auckland, a third generation family business, is currently growing 75,000 seedlings ready for dispatch to farmers during spring.

Manuka trees help increase water filtration, reduce erosion and significantly reduce pathogens and nitrates leaching into waterways
