Wet spring weather has hampered seeding across Ontario. Along with the delayed planting, the cooler temperatures may also be to blame for the presence of some cereal rusts in Ontario wheat crops. Rusts are becoming a serious threat to cereal crops in Eastern Canada – specifically stripe rust, leaf rust and stem rust. Leaf rust is the most common and stripe rust has been increasing in recent years.
OMAFRA is reporting leaf and stem rust in cereal fields in Ontario in its Field Crop Report. And if Mother Nature cooperates with the weather, there’s still time for an early season fungicide application to control rust and minimize crop losses. Rust prevention in cereals can increase yields by an average of 34%, according to independent research.*
